COLUMBUS, Ohio – Peter Mohler, a prominent medical researcher, has recently been named associate dean for basic sciences in The Ohio State University College of Medicine, one of the largest pioneering research academic medical institutions in the nation. Mohler, who is also director of The Dorothy M. Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and professor of internal medicine and physiology & cell biology at the medical school, will collaborate with Drs. Charles Lockwood and Clay Marsh, dean and vice dean for research at the College of Medicine, respectively, to advance the medical school’s research mission.

“We are very excited to have Peter in command to help us identify opportunities and further develop and solidify collaboration among healthcare leaders and scientists. I am confident that his expertise as a distinguished educator to young scientists, inspired team builder and prominent researcher can be leveraged to help advance the academic and strategic goals of the research program throughout our basic sciences,” says Lockwood.

His stellar administrative performance has made him an asset to Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center and the College and will no doubt help facilitate success of our research program future ventures,” Marsh adds. 

In his new role in the College’s Office of Research, Mohler’s responsibilities include: building and fostering multidisciplinary teams of physicians and basic scientists within the College and across the University to boost high impact science and translational medicine; strengthening mentoring and leadership programs for faculty and fellows; and cultivating strategic partnerships to engage national institutions and organizations for enhancement of Ohio State College of Medicine’s national reputation in the research space. 

Mohler came to Ohio State one year ago from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine where he was distinguished associate professor of cardiovascular medicine and associate professor of internal medicine and molecular physiology & biophysics. Prior to joining the University of Iowa faculty in 2006, Mohler was an assistant professor in pathology at Vanderbilt University. He was named a Pew Scholar by the Pew Charitable Trusts in 2007, and a Kavli Scholar of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2009. 

Mohler earned a doctorate in molecular physiology in 2000 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in 2004 at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Duke University. He has received numerous honors and awards for his work and has been principal investigator for multiple research grants. The Ohio State University College of Medicine, founded in 1914, is well known for its curricular innovation, world-renowned faculty, pioneering research and patient care. It is consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best public medical schools in the United States. Each year, nearly 700 residents and fellows train in more than 65 accredited graduate and residency programs. More than 13,700 College of Medicine MD and residency program graduates practice in all 50 states and in more than 50 countries around the world.
