Columbus, Ohio – The sixth edition of the nation’s leading obstetrics textbook, Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies has been released. Drs. Steven G. Gabbe and Mark B. Landon of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center led the textbook’s revision, which now includes new coverage of fetal origins of adult disease, evidence-based medicine, quality assessment, nutrition and global obstetric practices, as well as a redesigned format that allows readers to find key information quickly.
Gabbe, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences for The Ohio State University, Chief Executive Officer of the Wexner Medical Center, and a professor in Wexner Medical Center’s department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the former chair, is one of the world's leading experts on the complications of diabetes and pregnancy. Landon, the co-editor, is the current chair and professor in the department.
Gabbe has been an editor of this textbook since the first edition more than 25 years ago. Now, as the lead editor, he has seen the field evolve significantly.
“Today there are truly two patients, the mother and her fetus,” said Gabbe. “Compared to twenty years ago, our ability to assess fetal development and well-being through ultrasound is remarkable, and subsequently, pregnancy outcomes have improved. Furthermore, we now can link our understanding of how maternal nutrition and how it affects fetal growth and development and future adult disease back to in-utero life.”
Known as the single authoritative resource for obstetrics practice, Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies was first published by Elsevier in 1986. In addition to updated content, the entire sixth edition - including charts and graphs – is accessible online and is also available as an e-book.
This edition of Obstetrics is dedicated to Drs. Edward J. Quilligan and Frederick P. Zuspan, former Ohio State University medical students and residents who went on to lead distinguished careers in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Zuspan chaired the department of obstetrics and gynecology from 1974-1987.
“The dedication to Drs. Quilligan and Zuspan, pioneers in developing the subspecialty of maternal-fetal medicine, illustrates the robust expertise and knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology embodied by Ohio State,” said Landon. “Most obstetricians or those training as residents and fellows will have this book on their shelf and use it as a resource throughout their career. We are proud that the Ohio State University, who provided nine of the nearly 100 experts consulted for this textbook, can have such a footprint on the future of obstetrics and gynecology.”
The release of the textbook coincides with the launch of the new obstetrics and gynecology website hosted by the Wexner Medical Center and The Ohio State University College of Medicine. The website is a valuable new tool that contains research and information for patients, health professionals, and the general public, reinforcing Wexner Medical Center as a national leader in obstetrics and gynecology.
