Edmund Funai, MD, is professor of obstetrics and gynecology, vice chair of clinical affairs and associate dean for administration at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Dr. Funai is a cum laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and was awarded an academic scholarship to New York Medical College, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and fellowship in Maternal–Fetal Medicine (MFM) at NYU School of Medicine.

Following two years in the NYU Maternal–Fetal Medicine Faculty Practice, he was named director of obstetrics at Bellevue Hospital, NYU’s major affiliate. There, he was named chairman of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation’s Regional Perinatal Care Task Force and positively impacted patient safety at several NYC hospitals.

Dr. Funai was then recruited to Yale in July 2002, and has since authored more than 100 abstracts, 80 articles and nearly 20 book chapters. During his tenure as chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Yale, the MFM group tripled in faculty size, and routinely led the nation in both the quality and quantity of presentations at national meetings.

His research interests include hypertension in pregnancy and patient safety, and his work on patient safety was recognized by the Society for Maternal–Fetal Medicine, which presented him with the Award For Research Excellence at the 2008 annual meeting. He has been named to numerous “Best Doctors” lists, including those published by Castle–Connolly.
