About Me
I am a surgical oncologist treating patients with musculoskeletal cancers. My area of expertise is orthopaedic surgery, with a special focus on bone cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, spine surgery and complex limb reconstruction. The OSUCCC – James is home to one of the nation’s premier cancer-related orthopaedic surgery centers, where we provide comprehensive, individualized treatment for every patient.
I also serve as an assistant professor of Orthopaedics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where I’ve received several distinguished teaching honors, including being named Educator of the Year in 2012.
As a member of the Cancer Biology Program at OSUCCC – James, my research focuses on adjuvant chemotherapy for the management of soft tissue and bone sarcomas. I also investigate outcomes of limb reconstructions, oncology implant design, molecular biology and mechanisms of disease. One of my recent studies indicates that connective tissue growth factor, a downstream effector of transforming growth factor-Beta, could enable targeted therapy.
In my work to find treatments for these types of cancers, I’ve co-authored medical articles on surgical oncology and soft tissue sarcomas, presented nearly three dozen medical abstracts worldwide and have contributed to 45 published manuscripts. Additionally, I serve on the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and as a fellow with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
At the OSUCCC – James, I’m honored to partner with an extraordinary team of leaders who have a steadfast desire to create a cancer-free world.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 09/30/2022, Dr. Scharschmidt has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
