The thyroid helps control your body's metabolism.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the  neck just above the collarbone. It’s part of your endocrine system of glands and hormones. Thyroid hormones help control many activities in your body including your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and how fast you burn calories. These functions help set your body’s metabolism, the chemical activity in your cells that keep you alive.

Ohio State has specialists to help you if you would experience one of these thyroid disorders:

  • Goiter – an enlargement of the thyroid gland. It is not cancer.
  • Hyperthyroidism – overproduction of hormones.
  • Hypothyroidism – underproduction of hormones.
  • Thyroid nodules – lumpy growths in the thyroid gland. The majority are not serious. However, some can be cancerous.
  • Thyroiditis – swelling of the thyroid.
  • Thyroid cancer – metastatic disease that begins in the cells of the thyroid.
