What is a registered dietician?

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, registered dietitians (RDs) are food experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. RDs use their expertise to help people make unique, positive lifestyle changes. A registered dietician has:

  • Earned a bachelor’s degree with course work approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Completed an accredited, supervised practice program at a healthcare facility, community agency or foodservice corporation
  • Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Completed continuing professional education requirements by state licensing boards. In Ohio, the Ohio Board of Dietetics regulates RD practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t want eating to turn into a chore. Will I be able to eat foods I enjoy?

Registered dieticians will work with you to personalize an eating plan that is right for you. Calorie counting is not required except for short periods of focused attention if reducing calories is one of your goals.

My doctor says I’m gluten intolerant. How do I know what I can eat?

We’re trained to help you with just this kind of thing. Your registered dietician can help you identify tasty gluten-free foods, and we even have classes for you to learn about gluten-free eating in a fun way.

I’m lactose intolerant. Can I still drink milk? And how will I get enough calcium and vitamin D?

Many people who are lactose intolerant can drink some milk if it’s treated to remove the lactose, or if they take an enzyme tablet to break down lactose before they drink milk. If you don’t drink any milk, your registered dietician can help you find tasty ways to get the nutrients you need.

Will insurance cover nutrition and dietary services?

Coverage varies by carrier. Check with your health plan to see if these services are covered for you and if you need your doctor to give a referral.
