- Viral hepatitis B or C

- Genetic/metabolic conditions such as hereditary hemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease and alpha 1 antitrypsin disease, among others
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer)
- Chronic alcohol abuse
- Fatty liver
