The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's Rehabilitation Vision Program offers rehabilitation services to those affected by vision loss or impairment. Our services include a variety of tools and techniques to help you reach the highest level of function and wellness.

Our Patients

We treat patients experiencing a visual impairment that is not correctable by standard glasses, contact lenses, medicine or surgery. We also care for patients with visual impairments, as a result of:

  • Aging
  • Cataracts, a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision
  • Macular degeneration, a disease associated with aging that gradually destroys vision
  • Diabetes, a lifelong disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood
  • Glaucoma, a group of eye conditions that lead to damage to the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain
  • Neurological vision impairment
  • Vision affected as a result of a stroke, brain injury or illness

Our Services

Our Services

This program offers rehabilitation services to help in each phase of your rehabilitation — from services offered in the hospital (inpatient services) to those offered after returning home (outpatient services). These services continue your care to help achieve your highest level of recovery.

Following a physician's referral, your rehabilitation may include:

Functional improvement:

  • Suggestions for modifying your home, work and daily routines
  • Vision components (clearness, visual field, contrast sensitivity, glare reaction time)

Vision screening by occupational therapist or review of recent vision evaluation:

  • Video and computer technology (screen enhancement or magnification, closed circuit TV)
  • Nonoptical strategies (working at closer distances, using natural light, large-print books)
  • Optical devices (prescription magnifiers, reading glasses, telescopes)

Your personalized treatment plan starts with a team of specialists who may include:

  • Occupational therapists who specialize in improving patients' ability to complete activities of daily living
  • Social workers who specialize in the social, emotional and financial needs of families and patients
