Which implant is best for you?
Many women choose breast augmentation to have breasts that are more proportionate to their body frame. Breast implants improve the size, shape and contour of the breasts, adding fullness and volume. The two main types of breast implants are saline and silicone.
Saline implants have a silicone outer shell and are filled with a saltwater solution. They’re approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients over the age of 18. OSU Wexner Medical Center doctors fill saline breast implants after they’ve been inserted, which requires smaller incisions so that there’s less visible scarring.
The difference with silicone implants is that they’re filled with silicone gel instead of saline. The FDA approved silicone implants in 2006 for breast augmentation patients over the age of 22, and for breast reconstruction patients of any age. Many women prefer silicone implants because they have a more natural look and feel. Silicone implants are often beneficial for extremely thin patients and those having breast reconstruction.
