Ohio State surgeons are specialty trained in breast reduction for men and women

Overly large breasts can create physical and psychological discomfort for both men and women. Breast reduction is a common and very effective remedy that reduces excess tissue and fat. The procedure makes breasts more proportionate to your body frame, providing relief from back, neck and shoulder pain and even discomfort from the strain of bra-straps that cause indentations.

Male breast reduction for gynecomastia

Excess breast tissue and skin in men can be the result of a common condition called gynecomastia. This condition can be caused by issues including hormonal disorders and complications from medication. The onset of gynecomastia is often in adolescence. Aside from physical discomfort, it can raise psychological issues and even lead to severe depression.

What to expect

What to expect

Your surgeon isn’t only there for you during treatment. He or she is with you every step of the way – before, during and after.

Preparing for your treatment

An experienced plastic surgeon at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center will be happy to meet with you and discuss all aspects of breast reduction. You’ll get answers to all your questions, and together you’ll determine the best plan for your specific needs.

Patients who don’t need to have excess skin removed may only need liposuction to achieve breast reduction. These patients and others with special circumstances, like women concerned about breastfeeding, can discuss their options with one of our surgeons during consultation to determine an appropriate treatment plan.

During your treatment

Your surgeon removes excess skin and fat through an incision that’s made on each breast around the areola (the dark-pigmented area surrounding the nipple) down to the underside of the breasts. After the nipples are repositioned and the breasts are reshaped, your OSU Wexner Medical Center surgeon, who is highly trained to ensure minimal visual scarring, will close the incisions.

This procedure usually takes about two to four hours under a general anesthetic and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

After your treatment

Some temporary bruising and swelling in the breasts is expected after breast reduction. If there’s excess fluid buildup after the first few days, it can be removed with drainage tubes. Medication can alleviate any discomfort if necessary. Wearing a surgical compression bra for about one month will help facilitate the healing process. Many patients resume normal daily activities after about two weeks, but you should avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for at least four weeks after the procedure.
