Janis, MD, FACS: Let me explain to you this great center we have at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center called the Center for Abdominal Core Health. What is your core? Your core starts up here at the top of your abdomen, which essentially is the level of your diaphragm. It goes down to the sides and back and all the way down to your pelvic floor. This right here is your core. And if you have a hole in the muscles of your core, you have what's called a hernia. And a hernia is not an issue as long as something doesn't get stuck in it. So what we like to do at the Center for Abdominal Core Health is address your problem when it's an elective surgery, not when it's an emergent surgery in the middle of the night. So how do we do that? Well, you may have a simple problem. Maybe it's a first time operation, you've never had an operation before, or maybe you've had multiple operations before and have a lot of other health issues. Depending on your particular situation, we may bring additional specialists to bear on your problem. That may include multiple surgeons such as general surgeons, plastic surgeons, urologists, OB-GYNs, and others. We also would bring other specialists, including nutritionists, smoking cessation counselors, rehabilitation specialists, and others. This Center for Abdominal Core Health is about bringing the right team to you as an individual to help solve your individual problem and treat you like the patient and person that you are.
