A new game plan for sports medicine patients

Christopher Kaeding, MD: My name is Christopher Kaeding. I'm the executive director of sports medicine at The Ohio State University. When I first got here, things were very siloed.

You had your physical therapist doing physical therapy in their world, you had the orthopedic surgeons in the orthopedic surgery world, you had the non-operative primary care sports docs doing their thing. I'd been here for a couple of years, and I realized that a place like Ohio State University, which had such a breadth and diversity of expertise, we really should take all these areas that touch sports medicine and put them under one umbrella of the Ohio State University Sports Medicine Center. So that led us to becoming an academic center as well as a multidisciplinary clinical center.

We have upwards of 12 to 15 different disciplines practicing their expertise at the Jameson Crane Sports Medicine Institute. This combination of having a building specifically designed for our vision of a multidisciplinary multi-mission program, combined with the incredible talent we've been able to recruit and retain, allowed us to provide our patients these subspecialty programs such as the dance medicine program, our overhead athlete program, our barbell medicine program, our endurance medicine program that helps cyclers and swimmers and runners come in and get some biomechanical analysis and enhance their potential. This is all part of the exciting clinical side that benefits our patients.

We're also involved in many clinical trials. We have something like 15 industry sponsored clinical trials, which puts us on the cutting edge of clinical care, and this has also benefited our patients. So in my career, one of the things I'm most proud of is how this concept of bringing different disciplines together to form a high performing culture, how well that's worked here and the success that we've had.
