[Onscreen text: Isaiah Stokes Buckeye Pathways Summer Intern Ohio State Wexner Medical Center] Martin: Isaiah, what have you enjoyed most about your time at the Wexner Medical Center? Stokes: My favorite part is just getting to meet so many people. One thing that I've learned from my time here is that a hospital is like a -- people have told me this before, but the hospital is like a giant machine, with so many moving gears, so many moving parts. From an outside view, you don't really get to see those individuals who are really at the forefront and behind the scenes making everything function, because there's a lot of things going on. So, I think just getting to meet everybody who contributes their part to making the whole hospital run has been my most enjoyable part. Martin: Why should someone apply to be a Buckeye Pathways summer intern at Ohio State? Stokes: I'd always known that I wanted to be in health care, but I wasn't exactly too sure where or what part of it was right for me. I had a general idea, but I always know that when you spend time in something, you can discover something new. That it's like a puzzle piece that just fits right for you. And with this internship, I've really learned that there are so many different facets and so many kind of niche roles that exist within health care that I never knew before that existed. And they all excite me in a certain way and just, they appeal to certain things that I enjoy doing and that give me energy. And I think that this internship is just the perfect opportunity to really help you figure out what you enjoy in a career. Martin: What is something you will take away or learn or have learned from this experience in your internship? Stokes: I think my biggest takeaway from this internship is really that people are first in health care. As an individual. I have my own goals, my own ambitions, but the root of what I aspire to be and what I put in the effort and every day for is really just to help other people and improve the lives of others around me. Martin: You'll hear this as a consistent theme from anybody who's been touched by this internship on the medical center side, and that is that we are impacted as much or more than maybe we've impacted the interns than themselves. We have seen, and I've been so encouraged and inspired by the ambition, the curiosity, the enthusiasm and the boldness of our interns to just seek out uncomfortable opportunities and learning opportunities. It teaches me that you have to pursue learning with intention. And again, the impact they've had on our organization, not just from a personal standpoint, but even the projects that they've done, they'll be long-lasting even after their internships are over. Our organization will experience the benefits of those for years. And so this has significantly impacted me personally and our organization in a positive way.
