[Onscreen text: Charlene Frimpong Buckeye Pathways Summer Intern Ohio State Wexner Medical Center] Delisle: Being at Ohio State in the Wexner Medical Center has been awesome for me. I've been here for five years, and there's this team and family feel that has been awesome to be a part of. The work we do in the operating rooms, on the inpatient floors, is inspiring and having an opportunity to be a part of the journey we're on building one of the largest towers in the country is just amazing, and it's been a really great opportunity for me as well to learn from so many amazing people. So Charlene, what has been your experience working at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center? Frimpong: It's been a privilege to be here and to be under your mentorship. Through your guidance and support, I've gained both clinical and nonclinical experience to the operation of the hospital, which has really enhanced my understanding of the health care system. And the community here is very incredible. Everyone is so friendly, they receive you, and everyone is so much invested in your professional development, and I'm excited. I was proud to be a Buckeye Pathways Summer Intern. Delisle: So Charlene, you had a great experience and I wonder, for others who are thinking about, "Is this right for me?" can you just talk a bit about why somebody else should consider becoming one of our Buckeye Pathways participant? Frimpong: You should consider to be a Buckeye Pathway example intern because you get exposed to a wide range of career in health care. This is an academic research health institution and there's a lot of opportunities here. You get shadowing opportunities. There is a professional development section, and the network here is incredible. You get to learn what you want to do, find your passion. If there's something you want to do in the future, in the long-term, this is the right place for you to learn and discover your true passion. Delisle: As a mentor in this program, I always find it amazing. I learn so much about the future leaders of health care, and what I find so interesting is people come in with an idea of what they want to do with their career. They want to be a clinician, they want to move into hospital administration, and part of what I try to do is challenge them on what they think by getting them exposed to things that maybe they're not even aware of. Seeing that growth and evolution in just a short period of time, I find to be inspiring for me as well. And it always keeps me on edge with how can I continue to learn just like our undergraduates as they're trying to figure out what I want to do in my career? It always helps me also reflect on how am I doing, what am I doing to continue to learn and to continue to have an impact? Frimpong: Through this internship, I've learned that there are a lot of people here who are invested in my professional and career development, and being able to sit in on professional meetings, administrative meetings, and meeting great people has taught me that I don't have to be at a level to be among people who are higher in institution or higher in knowledge. My mentor gives me the opportunity to join him in hospital administrative meetings and I go for talks, listen to what the hospital administrators have to say, and has really helped me and improve my confidence that even though I may be an undergraduate, I can still be around people who are higher in mileage.
