Patrick Sweigert, MD: So thinking of misconceptions of bariatric surgery, one big myth that is out there is that surgery is just the easy way out. And the truth is surgery is a very strong and powerful tool, but patients really still do all the work. Most of the effort really involved in the entire process is not done in the operating room, it's in the subsequent months and really years.

Another myth that comes up about bariatric surgery is that it's unsafe, and really this is not true because modern bariatric surgeries have been studied extensively and they're generally very safe when done at experienced centers. With modern minimally invasive approaches, these procedures are even safer than many common surgeries like removal of your gallbladder, hysterectomy, or even joint replacements.
