HOLD - When to see a doctor for shoulder pain [Text on screen: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center When to see a doctor for shoulder pain] [Music playing] [Text on screen: Julie Bishop, MD Orthopedic Surgeon Ohio State Wexner Medical Center] Julie Bishop, MD: I think a lot of patients are always wondering, when should I seek care for my shoulder pain? And I think there's two instances. One, if you have a traumatic injury. So you fall, you slip down the steps, whatever it might be, and you have sudden onset of pain and you lose your function, I would see a doctor sooner than later to make sure that you didn't break anything in your shoulder or traumatically tear any important tendons in your shoulder. The next reason is because you have shoulder pain that maybe started gradually and no matter what you do, it's getting worse and worse. And when shoulder pain starts to interfere with the quality of your life, start to interfere with your sleep and interfere with your ability to do things that you enjoy, and it's not getting better with rest, with modifying your activity, with taking some over-the-counter medication, then I think it's time to see a physician so you can get back on track and get back to what you enjoy doing as soon as you can.
