What is a TIA or 'mini-stroke'? [Text on screen: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center What is a TIA or 'mini-stroke'?] [Music playing] [Text on screen: Matthew Gusler, DO Osteopathic Physician Ohio State Wexner Medical Center] Matthew Gusler, DO: A transient ischemic attack, or TIA, which sometimes people call a mini-stroke, is when people have symptoms of a stroke, meaning sudden onset of neurological symptoms, but the symptoms go away within 24 hours and there's no sign of stroke on the MRI. One, I would recommend going to the hospital to be evaluated because sometimes the symptoms can come back or two, if it's past that window, talking to your doctor about it because we need to do an evaluation to make sure there's no other cause that would put you at high risk for future stroke that we could address and prevent a future stroke.
