[Music playing] Larry Wu, MD: Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine therapeutic needling technique that has been practiced for over 3000 years. The most common conditions we treat include acute and chronic pain of the back, neck, and various joints. We also treat neuropathy, migraines, as well as stress and depression. There are many theories to explain how acupuncture works. In traditional Chinese medicine, there's a belief that there's energy in your body, and a simplified explanation is that acupuncture helps with this energy flow, as well as energy balance. We also know it causes various neurotransmitters involved in healing and inflammation to release, as well as the number of endorphins to release. Some points are also close to nerves and some are in myofascial planes. During your first appointment, we'll discuss what you would like treated, as well as some of your other health history, then we'll decide whether acupuncture will be a good treatment option for you. We'll then gently place very fine needles across your body while you relax on an acupuncture table. Most patients find this experience very relaxing, and some even fall asleep. You can expect a session to be anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes depending on your needs.
