It typically is caused by a bone spur under your shoulder blade. An impingement is defined as when the rotator cuff impinges on that bone spur under your shoulder blade. [Music fades] And so for most people, this leads to inflammation around the rotator cuff or the bursa of the rotator cuff, and typically is very responsive to non operative treatment, which involves physical therapy to regain strength and motion. Additionally, we will use anti-inflammatory medicines either by mouth or by injection to help improve pain so that patients can participate in physical therapy. [Music playing] I'd say shoulder impingement is probably the most common diagnosis that we make as shoulder doctors at Ohio State.
