Position summary

Cytotechnologist (Job Opening 445358) - The Cytology Laboratory is a functional area within the Department of Pathology which receives fresh and preserved specimens and prepared smears from OSU inpatient departments, outpatient departments, and outreach physician offices; Cytotechnologist to provide primary screening of gynecologic (GYN) and exfoliative (non-GYN) patient samples submitted to The OSU Medical Center cytology laboratory; locates and interprets specimens that are noted to have abnormal cytologic changes; submits abnormal specimens to a cytopathologist for further evaluation; evaluates on-site fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) slides in OSU Medical Center clinics; performs specimen adequacy assessment for FNAB and provides meaningful explanation of the microscopic findings to clinician(s) performing FNAB; prepares patient samples submitted for evaluation using laboratory techniques and instrumentation in the cytopreparation laboratory as outlined in the standard operating policy and procedures manual; participates in division quality assurance activities; successfully completes required annual proficiency testing survey; participates in GYN and non-GYN educational challenges. Hours of work are first shift with variance when on FNA service.

Education and experience

Bachelor's degree in cytotechnology, biology, medical technology or related field AND a certificate from an approved school of cytotechnology is required; Cytotechnologist Board of Registry certification through the American Society of Clincal Patholory required; experience with cytology preparation methods and staining processes preferred. Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen.
