Position summary

Cytoprep Technician (Job Opening 458829) - The Cytology Laboratory is a functional area within the Department of Pathology which receives fresh and preserved specimens and prepared smears from OSU inpatient departments, outpatient departments, and outreach physician offices; evaluates accuracy in labeling (both containers and slides), physician orders, and investigates specimen deficiencies including communications with appropriate physician office personnel to ensure accuracy and identification of all non-recollectable specimens; performs data entry in Sunquest to register a portion of test requests; orders tests in CoPath and is knowledgeable with multiple specimen classes and part type selection to ensure accuracy in billing and reporting; processes and concentrates exfoliative cellular material in fluid gynecological, non-gynecological, and fine needle aspiration specimens; performs various cellular concentration methods for non-gynecological specimens including centrifugation, cytocentrifuge and series concentration centrifugation to produce enriched cell blocks; uses automated instrumentation to perform and assess multiple staining techniques based on gynecological and non-gynecological specimen type; assesses specimen volume and cellular concentration to determine appropriate technical preparations; uses automated instrumentation to prepare gynecological specimens into concentrated cellular smears; maintains specimen integrity at all times; performs daily quality control to ensure test accuracy; participates in continuous quality assurance by collecting technical data for review by the Cytology Manager; maintains chemical inventory to ensure functionality of all automated instrumentation; adheres to established laboratory safety regulations within the area; maintains reagent and supplies inventory; assists laboratory manager with procurement and receipt of supplies; maintains laboratory equipment ensuring periodic maintenance and repair as specified.

Education and experience

Bachelor Degree in medical laboratory technology required or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Medical Laboratory Technology certification preferred or Bachelor's Degree in biological sciences with Medical Laboratory Technology certification; good working knowledge of the principles, operations and maintenance of laboratory procedures and equipment is required; previous cyto-preparation experience desired. Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre- employment physical, including a drug screen.
