The Ohio State University Family Medicine Residency Program provides a unique training experience, balancing the rigors of an academic program with the environment of traditional family medicine. As an integral part of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, our residents are clinical instructors in The Ohio State College of Medicine, providing the opportunity to teach medical students and other health care professionals elements of primary care, physical examination skills and doctor-patient relationship building. Our academic focus provides opportunities for research and scholarship which is unparalleled in community programs.

The Outpatient Care East clinical site trains committed family medicine residents to provide high quality, culturally competent healthcare in urban, multicultural and lower socioeconomic communities. Through innovative and inspired healthcare delivery, disease prevention, health promotion, research and leadership, we hope to diminish or eliminate racial, gender and socioeconomic healthcare outcome disparities.

Family Medicine at Outpatient Care East is located in census tract 28, which has been designated as an empowerment zone. Approximately 90 percent of the population is African American and 34 percent live below the federal poverty level. In addition, we are located in immediate proximity to primary care, low-income special population health professional shortage areas (HPSA).

Residents training at Outpatient Care East have an international rotation built into their third-year schedule, with funding guaranteed. Residents in the past have traveled to developing countries in Africa and Central America to learn more about HIV care. Residents training at Rardin are able to apply for funding to participate in an international rotation.
