Research focus

Dr. Kwiek is molecular pharmacologist and virologist whose PhD focused on the mechanism of action of antimalarial therapeutics. During his post-doctoral fellowship, he studied retrovirology and molecular epidemiology. His independent research program uses the tools of molecular virology, evolutionary biology, and molecular pharmacology to understand HIV-1 replication and pathogenesis. Specifically, he has combined molecular virology and epidemiology to determine the contribution of maternal-fetal blood admixture and syphilis co-infection to in utero and intrapartum HIV transmission; used single genome amplification to isolate HIV-1c from blood and placenta to identify regions of HIV-1 envelope and LTR associated with HIV-1 transmission and replication; defined the HIV-1 reactivation properties of a novel HDAC inhibitor (AR-42); discovered a novel fatty acid synthase inhibitor which has both anti-cancer (Alwarawrah et al.) and anti-HIV (submitted) activity; characterized human breast milk purchased on the internet.
