Mallory-Coleman/Columbus Orthopaedic Research Day took place on the OSU campus on Friday, June 2, 2023. Our largest event ever involved the participation of not only OSU residents, fellows, and students, but also those from the Mount Carmel and Doctors Hospital programs. Led by course director, Steven Lavender, Ph.D., the event featured 10 podium presentation and 16 poster presentations, a record number.

Dr. Carol Morris served as this year’s visiting professor and moderator. Dr. Morris is the Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Service and the Jack Byrne Chair for Adolescent and Young Adult Cancers at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Thank you to all who submitted an abstract this year and to all who contributed to make this event a success.

 Dr. Vaidya is professor and chair in the Department of Orthopaedics at Wayne State University and chief of Orthopaedic Trauma & Fellowship Director at Detroit Receiving Hospital.
Dr. Vaidya is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Vaidya is a member of the American Orthopaedic Association, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, the Michigan Orthopaedic Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has received numerous awards, including the Howard Rosen AO Trauma NA Teaching Award, the WSU Excellence in Teaching Award and the DMC/WSU Teaching Award for best educator as selected by residents in 2019. He has taught and mentored numerous fellows, residents and medical students. A widely-sought speaker and prolific author, he holds 12 medical patents. He also is a major in the Canadian Army Reserves.

Dr. Vaidya received his bachelor’s of science degree from Dalhousie University in 1987 and his medical degree from McGill University Faculty of Medicine in 1981, followed by an Orthopaedic Surgery residency at McGill, a fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons Canada, a fellowship in Orthopaedic Traumatology at the University of British Columbia and a fellowship in Spinal Surgery at McGill University.

Faculty, trainees, and staff all enjoyed a grand rounds presentation entitled “So You Think You Can Nail a Femur?... I Did” Dr. Vaidya also spent time with the residents and provided feedback and insight on numerous case presentations.

Next up in our visiting professor series: Russell Warren, MD, Sports Medicine Visiting Professor on May 25, 2023.

 Residents and Faculty were treated to a visit from renowned sports medicine physician Russell Warren, MD on Thursday, May 25, 2023. Dr. Warren gave an excellent grand rounds presentation on “Rotator Cuff Repair: Why Do We Have Defects” then followed with a presentation to the residents entitled “ACL Surgery: The Old and the New”. The Ortho residents also enjoyed time presenting cases to Dr. Warren and learning from his many years of experience.

Dr. Warren has been on faculty at the Hospital for Special Surgery since 1977. He served as surgeon-in-chief from 1993 to 2003. He is the team physician for the New York Giants football team, and oversees all medical care for the players. Dr. Warren received his MD from the State University of New York at Syracuse and completed his residency in Orthopaedics at the Hospital for Special Surgery and his fellowship in shoulder surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. Dr. Warren has authored numerous publicatiosn over his career and has led multiple research projecots and clinical trials.

The OSU Department of Orthopaedics is very pleased to congratulate Paul Alvarez, MD for receiving the 2021 -2022 John R. Kean Resident of the Year Award from Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The award is given to an outstanding resident rotating at NCH, based on the following criteria: Initiative in patient care, surgical preparedness, Grand Rounds presentation, participation in didactics, leadership among peers, teaching skills, team skills, internal feedback and patient & family feedback.

The award was presented in the spring of 2023, for the 2021 – 2022 year. Comments regarding Dr. Alvarez include “very capable surgeon, prepared and well read”, “excellent resident, very caring with kids and families”, “great performance in clinic and the OR”, and “engaged and interested the entire rotation.”

We are so very proud of Paul for earning this honor!

The Ohio Union on the OSU campus was the scene for the 5th annual Hand & Upper Extremity Symposium on April 28, 2023. This event draws faculty and alumni from around the country as well as residents and fellows from many of the hand fellowship programs throughout the state of Ohio. This year’s event was our largest ever! We were pleased to host this event at a new space – the impressive Ohio Union.

Course Chair Hisham Awan, MD and Course Co-Directors, Sonu Jain, MD, and Ronald Brown, MD developed an outstanding slate of talks covering all areas of hand and upper extremity surgery. Daniel Osei, MD, Fellowship Director for Hand & Upper Extremity at the Hospital for Special Surgery served as an excellent keynote speaker and moderator, with his keynote address on Solving the Cubital Tunnel Conundrum. The day concluded with the annual “Buckeye Cup” Quiz Bowl. Several programs participate and all did VERY well, however, in the end, one team was victorious. Congrats to the OSU team for taking home the “cup” and bragging rights this year!

 Dr. Grant Jones was recently selected for the Mazzaferri-Ellison Society of Master Clinicians in recognition of his exemplary service and excellence in clinical practice, mentoring and role modeling, professionalism, leadership and service to the institution.

The Mazzaferri-Ellison Society of Master Clinicians was created in 2018 and is named after Dr. Ernie Massaferri, Sr. and Dr. Chris Ellison. The society includes 55 members from 15 clinical departments with up to 10 members admitted annually based on peer nominations.

Career and nomination highlights:

• Exemplifies the consummate academic ‘team player’ and his commitment to his partners, our institution and the profession is total and unquestionable.
• Widely recognized in clinical excellence, he has been recognized in numerous ways, as a Castle Connolly “Top Doctor” repeatedly, receiving the Ohio Physician of the Year Award by the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association, selected for the AOSSM Traveling Fellowship for a medical tour of South Africa and inducted into the COSIDA-NCAA Academic Hall of Fame among many others.
• Has received the Excellence in Teaching Award twice and was selected by medical students as one of the 17 most effective teachers.
• His greatest attribute is his professionalism, humanity and collegiality; qualities that are known to all that know him, always willing to step up, help and contribute.

Teresa is a NP in the Division of Hand and Upper Extremity. She has been at The Ohio State University for her entire career of 36 years. She was a part of the Orthopaedic Trauma service for 14 years and has been with the Hand & Upper Extremity service for the past 13 years.

The College of Nursing Alumni Award is presented to a College of Nursing Alumni Society Board member who has demonstrated a sustained leadership role that is exemplified by exceptional leadership, regular participation, and encouragement of new ideas to meet the goals of the organization.

The entire department congratulates Teresa on this accomplishment. We are very proud of her for her commitment to patient care and are fortunate to have her on our team!

Dr. Paprosky, Professor of Orthopaedics at Rush University, was one of the first surgeons to perform total hip surgery with cementless implants, which is today's standard. He developed the Paprosky Classification used worldwide for performing Revision surgery. Dr. Paprosky and his colleague Dr. Charles Engh developed and implanted the first gender specific hip for women 15 years ago. These concepts have led to the development of today's gender specific implants for active females. Dr. Paprosky was also the recipient of the 2018 John Charnley Award and has made multiple contributions to our understanding and practice of primary and revision TKA. Dr. Paprosky is a pioneer, innovator, teacher, and a tremendous natural athtlete!

Dr. Paprosky completed medical school at McMaster University School of Medicine and did his residency at Henry Ford, followed by a fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital, Tufts University

Faculty, trainees, and staff all took part in a grand rounds presentation entitled “Dealing with Bone Loss in Acetabular and Femoral Revisions: Current Status.” Dr. Paprosky also spent time with the residents by moderating case presentations and presenting on the topic of revision total knees.

Congratulations to Julie Bishop, MD on her election to the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Executive Committee as Treasurer-Elect.  Dr. Bishop brings her years of experience and leadership at OSU Orthopaedics to this national organization!

Department of Orthopaedics Holds 8th Annual Michael J. Patzakis, MD Endowed Lectureship

The 8th iteration of the annual Michael J. Patzakis Endowed Lectureship took place on Friday, September 9 at the OSU Fawcett Center.

Endowed in 2015, this lectureship has grown over the years thanks to the generosity of Dr. Patzakis, an OSU College of Medicine alum and a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon and scholar.

Program

Each year an esteemed visiting professor is invited to moderate the presentations. This year we were pleased to host Alexander McLaren, M.D., Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The University of Arizona. A half day of presentations, including his keynote presentation, focused on musculoskeletal infections and included speakers from both industry and academics. The full program can be found here.

Dr. McLaren was joined by alumni visiting professor, Greg Kolovich, M.D., Class of 2014, Hand & Upper Extremity Surgeon at Optim Orthopaedics and Chief Medical officer and Co-Founder of Oxos Medical. Dr. Kolovich also spent time with the residents talking about entrepreneurship and sharing advice on the first years in practice.

Awards

Leadership: As a former professor and chairman of Orthopaedics, Dr. Patzakis recognizes and appreciates the role residents play as leaders in our programs, our institutions, and our communities. To honor this role, he graciously established an annual award intended for the resident in our program who best demonstrates leadership.

This year’s recipient is Joseph Drain, M.D., PGY5 Resident

Research: Throughout his career, Dr. Patzakis has been committed to the promotion and expansion of research within the field of orthopaedics and appreciative of the role residents play as researchers and future leaders in innovation and breakthroughs in treatment modalities. To honor this role, he also established an annual award intended for the resident in our program who best demonstrates a commitment to quality research.

This year’s recipient is Alex DiBartola, M.D., Class of 2022

The OSU Department of Orthopaedics is forever grateful to Dr. Patzakis and his family for their support of our education programs, our residents, and of scientific advancement in orthopaedics. He is truly special individual and we look forward to seeing him every year. We were honored that he was able to join us for the program again this year and delighted that three of his children could attend with him. All were able to enjoy a very special weekend of activities and Buckeye football!

The Orthopaedic Residency Cadaveric Education Curriculum was developed by Associate Program Director Kanu Goyal, MD, and several others in order to supplement clinical operative experience with surgical cadaveric instruction, and education for our residents. Labs take place in the newly opened state-of-the-art Crane Sports Medicine Institute Surgical Skills Lab. The first lab took place in October, 2020.

With the help of all orthopaedic faculty, and the collaboration of the Crane Lab staff, the curriculum is a perennial year-long program consisting of forty two-hour sessions. In September, we will kick off the 3rd year of this program. The labs are mandatory for all residents and each lab session has been designed for a specific PGY level, PGY2 through PGY5, with specific pre-lab instruction, lab objectives, and post-lab evaluation. The ORCEC lab series is a true highlight of our residency program!

The Department of Orthopaedics is pleased to congratulate Julie Bishop, M.D on her induction into the Mazzaferri-Ellison Society of Master Clinicians!

The society was created in 2018 to recognize outstanding “Master Clinicians” who excel in clinical practice, clinical teaching, mentoring/role modeling, professionalism, leadership and service to the institution. It was named after Dr. Ernie Mazzaferri, Sr., and Dr. Chris Ellison, in recognition of their exemplary service, clinical expertise, and their passion for training the next generation of physicians. The Society currently includes 47 members from 11 clinical departments.

Dr. Bishop was nominated by Joel Mayerson, M.D., Timothy Miller, M.D., and James Borchers, M.D. for demonstrating the highest standards of professionalism and patient care. Dr. Bishop truly exemplifies all qualities and ideals of the Mazzaferri-Ellison society of Master Clinicians.

A few highlights from her nomination:

• Dr. Bishop is widely recognized nationally and internationally for her clinical excellence in treating all pathologies of the shoulder
• She has been named a Top Doctor in orthopaedic surgery every year since 2018, and among Castle-Connolly’s Exceptional Women in Medicine since 2019
• In addition to developing one of the busiest shoulder arthroplasty practices in Ohio, she is routinely consulted on complex shoulder cases by surgeons across the country nearly every week
• She served her profession well by her appointment as the American Shoulder and Elbow Society’s representative to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Coding, Coverage and Reimbursement Committee
• In 2021, she was one of only 20 surgeons in the country selected to the AAOS Leadership Institute
• Her greatest strength is teaching and educating students and physician trainees and she has received the Educator of the Year award three times
• She was the driving force behind developing the MSK LSI curriculum and drove the course to become on of the most highly rated courses in the medical school
• In 2021, she received the COM Alumni Faculty teaching award for her efforts
• She is among the foremost leaders in impactful clinical outcomes research in her specialty and has 92 peer reviewed journal publications and 18 book chapters
• She is a role model for junior faculty, as well as multiple other trainees and faculty members since she first came to Ohio State

Congratulations Dr. Bishop!

We are saddened to share that John Roberts, MD, beloved Ohio State University orthopaedic surgeon, passed away Thursday, June 9. Dr. Roberts was known as the “face of Ohio State Orthopaedics” for more than 40 years.

Born in 1930 in Idaho, Dr. Roberts completed his undergraduate degree at Stanford University in 1952. He then earned his medical degree at Northwestern University in 1956 and completed a surgical internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. In 1957, he married his wife of 65 years, Carole Miller, and began service as a captain in the U.S. Army, serving as a battalion and flight surgeon at Ford Richardson, Alaska until 1959. After his discharge from the Army, he moved to Detroit, where he completed a general surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital in 1960.

Dr. Roberts arrived in Columbus in 1960 to begin his orthopaedic surgery residency at White Cross Hospital (now Riverside Methodist Hospital) and Columbus Children’s Hospital (now Nationwide Children’s Hospital). The program that he completed in 1963 was integrated with The Ohio State University. As such, Dr. Roberts’ career at Ohio State began with his appointment as a “demonstrator and resident” in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1962. After a brief tenure in private practice in Columbus, lasting from 1964-1967, Dr. Roberts was appointed as an assistant professor of Surgery in the Division of Orthopaedics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. In 1977, he was promoted to associate professor. He served continuously at Ohio State until his retirement in 2008. Dr. Roberts was instrumental in the creation of the Othopaedic Prison Service at Ohio State, which he began in 1994 and directed until 2008.

Dr. Roberts was a devoted educator of Orthopaedic Surgery for over 40 years. During that time, he trained more than 200 orthopaedic residents and hundreds of medical students. Many local orthopaedic surgeons regard him as their mentor. In 2000, Dr. Thomas Mallory, former chair of the Department of Orthopaedics, created the John B. Roberts Award for Excellence in Orthopaedics, an award that has been given to an exemplary Ohio State medical student every year since its inception. In 2012, the orthopaedics faculty designated Dr. Roberts a “Living Legend.” In 2012, grateful former residents established the John B. Roberts Educational fund to further support resident education. Upon his retirement in 2008, Dr. Roberts was approved for emeritus status. He remained active in the program and community for many more years.

Dr. Roberts has been quoted as saying “since I couldn’t be an airline pilot, this isn’t a bad way to make a living!” Countless alumni of The Ohio State University orthopaedic program attribute their success to Dr. Roberts. He will be remembered for his kind spirit and his dry sense of humor.

 

The Scioto Country Club was the scene on Friday, June 3rd, for our first in-person graduation celebration since 2019! A good time was had by all as we celebrated our residency and fellowship graduates as well as our award winners.

The Introduction to The Practice of Medicine is an online lecture series housed on the Center for Continuing Medical Education (CCME) website. The lecture series was designed to increase the exposure of housestaff to non-traditional curricular topics mandated by the ACGME. Residents are required to complete 10 modules throughout the course of their training program and must sign up for an account on the CCME website. Fellows are exempt from the IPM requirement but are encouraged to participate in the lecture series.

When you register on the CCME homepage, make sure to check “OSUWMC Housestaff” under the Hospital Affiliation category.

The lectures are available 24 hours a day and require Real Audio for viewing. All PCs in the 3 West Doan Hall on-call suite, in addition to many individual department areas, are equipped for viewing. Any questions regarding the IPM lecture series can be directed to Erica Twersky in the GME office (3-6606).

Our 45-credit-hour MS degree program is designed for trainees interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine. This degree provides an opportunity for promising clinically trained individuals to develop into independent biomedical academicians, and to facilitate the transition from postdoctoral training to a career as an independent investigator and educator. The program can be completed in five quarters during the fellowship research time. Approval of program director and GME office required prior to beginning the program.

Requirements:

• MD or DO degree
• Concurrent enrollment in an OSU or Nationwide Children’s Hospital training program
• GPA of 3.0 in all undergraduate and previous graduate work

A two-year Master of Public Health with a specialization in clinical investigation and outcome research for residents, fellows and junior faculty members who are interested in receiving formal training in conducting clinical investigations and health outcomes evaluations. This 57-credit-hour program is part of the College of Public Health. Approval of program director and GME office required prior to beginning the program.
