About our otolaryngology education programs
Education has always been a priority and a source of pride for the department. The Department of Otolaryngology residency education continues to be the educational focus for departmental faculty. We provide unparalleled preparation for physicians completing their training here for a career as an otolaryngologist or head and neck surgeon in either an academic or community setting.
Medical Students
The Department of Otolaryngology actively participates in the education of medical students. The department provides didactic lectures and offers a number of courses to medical students.
Residency Program
The Ohio State University Otolaryngology Residency Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
The residency program accepts four residents per year. It is a five-year program. The first year is a surgical internship which is completed here on campus at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center with a designated six month otolaryngology block.
Fellowship Programs
The department provides fellowship educational experiences for individuals who desire to expand their areas of expertise in anticipation of full-time academic careers. These fellowships range from total laboratory experiences learning basic research or, more recently, clinical fellowships.
The clinical fellowships currently available in the department are in neurotology, head and neck oncology, skull base surgery, laryngology and pediatric otolaryngology at Nationwide Children's Hospital. The Allergy Immunology Fellowship is at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children's Hospital. The clinical fellowship programs represent an enhancement to the resident education as the clinical fellows act as faculty to support the resident educational experience. These programs have been designed for individuals seeking a full-time academic career with a focused area of expertise.
Continuing Medical Education
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Department of Otolaryngology supports the College of Medicine's efforts to provide quality continuing medical education (CME) to physicians and other healthcare professionals through The Center for Continuing Medical Education.
The Department of Otolaryngology also offers educational events and courses that includes a skull base surgery course, an annual Head and Neck Microvascular Fellow Boot Camp and an annual department Alumni Symposium.
