Medical Student Experiences

The Department of Radiology is committed to the educational experience of medical students. We believe that radiology spans across all medical fields of study and adds depth to any specialty. We attempt to broaden our students' knowledge in order to mold superior physicians of the future.

Fourth-year medical students are provided a myriad of opportunities when it comes to Radiology. We offer Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology electives, individual and research studies, away and international rotations, and a Pediatric Radiology rotation at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Diagnostic Radiology Experience

Our Diagnostic Radiology experience has been designed to include all radiology subspecialties. During a four-week rotation, students will have the ability to see radiology through the eyes of a specialist while working with faculty and residents. The sections of focus include musculoskeletal, neuroradiology, abdominal, breast, chest, interventional, ultrasound and nuclear medicine. Medical students will have the chance to view the daily activities in the reading rooms in addition to patient care areas. Our students receive daily didactic lectures and case presentations from specialty trained faculty and residents. Students further advance their radiology education by producing a case report and presenting it to the faculty, residents and other students on rotation.

Individual Studies

For those students who wish to have a more tailored, one-on-one experience, we offer individual studies and research experiences. Once matched with a preceptor, students can focus their education on a specialized section or research topic. Students may also choose to work on one of the many research projects within the department. Students interested in either or both of these experiences must first complete the corresponding application in Vitals.
Interventional Radiology

The interventional radiology four-week rotation is clinically-based and focused on patient care and teamwork. Participation is a must in the daily procedures, work-up of consults, pre- and post-procedural patient care, and inpatient rounding when appropriate. Experience consists of five full days in the interventional radiology lab during the week.

Away and International Rotations

The Ohio State University College of Medicine students who wish to further explore the field of radiology are encouraged to visit other universities. This is set up on an individual basis and curriculum requirements depend on the individual institution. Institutions both within the United States and worldwide are considered. Please reach out to the Global Health Office for any details about international rotations.
Nationwide Children's Hospital

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, in conjunction with Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH), offers a rotation for students interested in pediatric radiology. This four-week rotation exposes students to a variety of departmental sections while maintaining a focus on children and young adults.

Visiting medical students

Osteopathic & Allopathic students (United States)
The Ohio State University accepts applications via the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) offered by the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). Please visit the VSAS website for more information regarding application requirements, catalog search and contact information.

Underrepresented in Medicine scholarships
In addition to the Office of Diversity and Inclusion URiM scholarship, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Department of Radiology invites fourth-year medical students from groups historically excluded or underrepresented in medicine interested in pursuing a career in Radiology or their subspecialties to apply for our visiting student scholarship program. Please note, this program offers only Radiology experiences.

A $2,000 scholarship is available for one Diagnostic Radiology applicant and one Interventional Radiology applicant. If selected, half ($1,000) of the scholarship will be made available prior to your start date with the other half made available after the successful completion of your Radiology experience. This scholarship is intended to help defray the cost of travel and lodging for your in-person experience. (Note the OSU Department of Radiology is not responsible for making any of these arrangements.)

Eligibility for Department of Radiology scholarship for students from historically excluded groups:

Applicants must have applied for a visiting student experience through the College of Medicine VSLO platform.
Applicants must simultaneously apply for a scholarship through the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to be considered for a Department of Radiology visiting student scholarship. Letters of recommendation can be used for both applications.
Applicants must be in good academic standing and must have completed all core clinical clerkships with passing grades by the start of the OSU rotation.

Note as the Department of Radiology’s clinical needs change, locations, faculty availability, and didactic lecture times may change or be unavailable during your visiting student experience. We will do our best to notify you of these changes in a timely manner.
