Our Educational Opportunities
The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery (CMIS) at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is committed to the ongoing surgical training of medical students, residents, fellows, allied health professionals and practicing physicians. We have offered a number of outstanding educational opportunities throughout the years and to date we have trained over 1,200 surgeons in minimally invasive approaches to surgical procedures.While we are proud of our accomplishments in the educational realm, we look forward to offering more training to a variety of learners. We remain committed to organizing training on clinical applications of surgical technology, such as), robotic surgery, minimally invasive colorectal surgery, laparoscopic hernia repair, bariatric and metabolic diseases including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies and reflux disease. The goal of our education program is to raise the quality of technology in minimally invasive surgery and patient care by improving access to highly trained advanced medical and surgical care specialists.
Advanced Training Programs
The CMIS sponsors advanced training programs in multiple areas, including minimally invasive general and gastrointestinal surgery, advanced therapeutic endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery, and a specialized post doctoral research position. All of these programs are designed to provide the highest level of training in the advanced techniques of minimally invasive surgery, preparing trainees for future clinical practice, research and teaching. The program director is a full-time faculty member of the Department of Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Teaching faculty are fully trained, experienced surgeons with a depth of experience in the application of minimally invasive surgery.

Postdoctoral Researcher
Robotic Surgery Training Programs
Surgery programs are offered for training with use of the da Vinci® robot alone or with specialty-specific mentoring with one of our surgeons in procedures within the visiting surgeon’s field. Observation of live procedures without robot training is also available.
FLS, FES and FUSE Programs
The Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS), Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES) and Fundamentals Use of Surgical Energy (FUSE) programs were designed for surgical residents, fellows and practicing physicians to learn and practice laparoscopic skills, and have the opportunity to measure and document those skills.
