Personal statement: I completed my undergraduate education at Sichuan University, P.R. China and earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry in 2000. I then attended the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences to obtain my PhD in the study of cellular and molecular biology. I completed my PhD in 2006, and was invited by Drs. William Hait and Jin-ming Yang to join the Cancer Institute of New Jersey as a postdoctoral fellow. In 2008, I transferred to Dr. Jianjie Ma’s group in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Robert Wood John Medical School to pursue my second postdoctoral training. I was subsequently promoted to instructor in 2011. My doctoral and postdoctoral studies focused on cell membrane biophysics and biochemistry. I published over 20 papers during this period (2004-2012), and was the first to demonstrate that microRNAs can regulate expression of p-glycoprotein, a major protein responsible for cancer multidrug resistance, and regulate expression of beclin-1, an essential protein in autophagy. Both papers have been well received in the scientific community and have received more than 600 citations within six years, according to Google Scholar. I also discovered two molecular partners of MG53. One is polymerase I and transcript release factor (PTRF), which is involved in initiation of MG53-mediated membrane repair, and the other is nonmuscle myosin IIA (NMIIA), which is the motor for the movement of MG53-containing vesicles. These discoveries lead to my scientist development grant (SDG) award from American Heart Association (AHA). 

Upon completion of my training in 2012, I joined the faculty of The Ohio State University as an assistant professor of surgery and have developed several projects focused on tissue protection in different human diseases, including myocardial infarction, muscular dystrophy and corneal wounds. In addition to an SDG grant from the AHA, I was awarded (together with Dr. Zhenguo Liu from the Department of Internal Medicine) an NIH R01 grant, focusing on stem cell protection after transplantation. I am also the PI of another NIH R01 grant, which focuses on determining the molecular mechanisms of development of muscular dystrophy. This grant was awarded in April, 2016. I have authored or co-authored 43 peer-reviewed publications (2013-2016) and one book chapter to date. Results of my research efforts, including 16 published abstracts, have been presented at regional, national and international meetings.

Currently, I am active in the training of postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, medical students and undergraduate students through the Department of Surgery and the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. I am also an active member of professional societies including the Biophysical Society and the American Heart Association. I am also an active study section member for the AHA Basic Cell Membranes and Subcellular Organelles study section. I serve as editorial board member for six scientific journals and have served as a peer reviewer for more than 50 scientific journals for over 150 manuscripts since 2007.
