Sharing Surgery Advancements
The annual Department of Surgery Research Conference is designed to bring students, residents, fellows, faculty and guests together to share and discuss results of research relevant to surgery. It is also an opportunity for a variety of students training with faculty in the Department of Surgery (including medical students, residents, graduate students, and postdoctoral research trainees) to develop their scientific communication skills. Each year the Department of Surgery invites a leader in surgery to visit The Ohio State University to get to know our student trainees and faculty through a variety of activities including participation as a faculty judge at the Annual DOS Research Conference. It is our hope that these annual conference interactions will stimulate new ideas, projects, and collaborations.
22nd Annual Department of Surgery Research Conference
The 22nd Annual Department of Surgery Research Conference was held on Thursday, June 1, 2017. We were delighted to welcome Mary T. Hawn, MD, MPH, FACS, the Stanford Medicine Professor of Surgery and chair of the Department of Surgery at Stanford University as our 42nd Annual Zollinger Visiting Professor and guest judge.
We received a record number of abstract submissions in 2017, reflecting a broad collection of basic/translational, clinical, health services and surgical education research topics. The abstracts were reviewed and scored by members of the Department of Surgery Research Council and selected for oral and poster presentation based on the quality of the science, novelty and diversity of the topic. Thirty-two abstracts were ultimately selected for presentation at the conference (13 for general poster presentation, 7 for judged poster presentation, and 12 for oral presentation). Abstract winners were Maria H. H. Balch, MS (1st Place Oral), Amitava Das, PhD and Christopher J. McCulloh, MD (a tie for 2nd Place Oral), Anahita Jalilvand, MD (3rd Place Oral), and Eliza Beal, MD, MS (1st Place Poster).
DOS faculty were invited to serve as Faculty Discussants and provided comments to frame the context and importance of the research and to stimulate discussion. To enhance our residents’ experience with public comment and discussion, each oral presentation also had an invited Resident Discussant. Several of the conference presenters are either currently enrolled in or graduates of the College of Medicine Masters of Medical Science Program or other Ohio State advanced degree programs. Some of the presenters were current or prior NIH T32 supported research trainees.
