Chief, Division of Pediatric Surgery

BesnerH. William Clatworthy Professor of Pediatric Surgery

Nationwide Children's Hospital
700 Children's Drive
Columbus, Ohio, 43205
614-722-3914

Specialty interests: Pediatric congenital abnormalities, necrotizing enterocolitis and pediatric burns

Research interests: Growth factor involvement in wound healing, intestinal injury, tissue engineering and stem cell research

Research center: Center for Perinatal Research

General research: Dr. Gail Besner's primary research began in 1990 with the identification of the growth factor "heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor" (HB-EGF). The long range goal of this research is to determine whether or not HB-EGF could be used in therapies to protect and treat intestinal damage in high-risk neonates. Her studies have shown that HB-EGF's anti-inflammatory effects and chemical properties play a vital role in the regenerating of intestinal cells after they have been damaged. Lab research has shown that HB-EGF can protect the intestine from damage caused by hemorrhagic shock, blood supply restriction and necrotizing enterocolitis. Clinical studies are on the horizon to further test HB-EGF as a treatment option.

Research Funding:
HB-EGF and Intestinal Ischemia/Reperfusion, National Institutes of General Medical Sciences
HB-EGF Therapy for Necrotizing Enterocolitis, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
Role of NO and Endothelin in Human NEC, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

Education:
BA: Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 1978
MD: University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH, 1982
Specialty Training: Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA; Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY

Additional accomplishments: In the past several years, Dr. Besner has been the lead surgeon for the successful separation of three sets of conjoined twins at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The first set of twins (pygopagus) was referred to Dr. Besner from Liberia, Africa, the second set (thoraco-omphalopagus) from central Ohio and the third set (pygopagus) from Uganda, Africa. The publicity for the hospital resulting from the first two operations led to advertising equivalency of over $4,500,000, reaching 342 million viewers (including Dateline NBC, Connie Chung Tonight, Good Morning America, American Morning with Paula Zhan) and over 11 million readers.
