Jianjie Ma, PhD, the Karl P. Klassen Chair in Thoracic Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and an investigator at Ohio State’s Dorothy M. Jianjie Ma, PhD, received a Therapeutic Development Award from the Department of Defense, on a project titled “Developing MG53 as a Novel Protein Therapeutic for Acute Lung Injury” (2018-2023). This project involves collaboration between Ohio State, University of Minnesota and TRIM-edicine, Inc.

Jianjie Ma, PhD, will receive a new R01 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute on the topic of “Ca Signaling Crosstalk From SR to Mitochondria in the Heart.” 

Peter Lee, MD, PhD, MPH, received a K08 award from National Institute of General Medical Sciences for “Tissue Engineered Skeletal Muscle Delivering a Myokine Protein to Treat Volumetric Muscle Loss.”

Bryan Whitson, MD, PhD, will receive a new R01 grant from National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute on the topic of “Preservation and Rescue of the Lung Donor Allograft for Transplantation.”

Renzhi Han, PhD,.received his first R01 competitive renewal from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute on the topic of “Ano5 in Muscle Health and Disease,” which earned a fundable score of 13%. View PubMed

Hua Zhu, PhD, recently had two papers accepted by Acta Pharmacologica Sinica and Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry regarding cancer immune checkpoint blockade therapy and activating Akt/NOS to inhibit autophagy and promote angiogenesis, respectively. View PubMed

Kristyn Gumpper, a graduate student in Dr. Ma’s laboratory, received a pre-doctoral fellow from the American Heart Association.

Two new faculty members will join the Department of Surgery, whose primary focus is on basic and translational research. Dr. Chuanxi Cai is currently an associate professor at Albany Medical College. His research interests are in cardiovascular disease and stem-cell therapy. Dr. Jae-kyun Ko established a biotechnology company specializing in efficient methodology to perform DNA-mutagenesis and genome-modification. He will bring to Ohio State his expertise in molecular and cell biology, and serve as the director of Molecular Biology Core.

William Carson, MD, received the Give 18 Fore Cancer Research Award given to leading doctors and scientist to support critical cancer research projects.
