Are varicose or spider veins preventing you from loving your legs?
Venous disease is a general term for some of the common conditions that occur when blood pools in your leg veins, causing pain, unsightly veins and other conditions. Veins pump blood to your heart, and your leg veins contain valves that help keep blood flowing upward, against gravity. If these valves become weak or damaged, blood can flow back down into your legs and pool in your veins.
Spider veins and varicose veins
Spider veins (clusters of small veins that appear red, purple or blue) and varicose veins (swollen veins, close to the skin, that sometimes look like cords) are two common venous diseases. While spider veins are typically painless, varicose veins can be extremely painful. Both vein conditions lead to unsightly veins on the legs.
Spider veins and varicose veins can be effectively treated by Ohio State’s team of vascular surgery experts at Total Vein Care
- You don’t need to live with painful or unsightly veins on your legs thanks to effective, non-invasive treatments at our convenient outpatient Total Vein Care office.
- At your first consultation, our physicians will review your health history, perform a physical exam and, if needed, conduct a non-invasive, painless ultrasound to review the flow of blood in your veins.
- We treat spider veins and varicose veins using a variety of options, most commonly by sclerotherapy.
- Sclerotherapy is a noninvasive treatment where a liquid medication is injected into the vein using a very small needle, which causes the vein to scar and forces the blood to reroute to healthier veins. Eventually, the collapsed vein will reabsorb into your leg and will fade from sight.
- Please know that cosmetic or elective procedures such as spider vein treatment are typically not covered by insurance and are considered a self-pay service.
