About Me
I am an expert head and neck surgeon who specializes in the treatment of benign and malignant head and neck tumors. My areas of special interest are in skin cancers (such as melanomas), salivary gland tumors and tongue cancer. I perform more than 270 major head and neck operations (including reconstructions) every year. In 2017, I was rated in the top 10 percent of physicians in the nation for patient satisfaction.
After graduating from medical school, I completed five years of head and neck surgery residency at the University of Michigan. I then completed an additional year of advanced training (fellowship) at the OSUCCC – James specializing in the management of head and neck cancers.
I train future surgeons and teach medical students in my roles as associate residency program director, director of Medical Student Education and assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.
I am very interested in science and research, which directly impact patient care. I study how much tissue needs to be removed for each different type of cancer (known as surgical margin), reconstruction involving tissue transplantation, and genes that predict how skin cancers spread. The OSUCCC – James gives me the resources to be able to further my research in order to help more patients, and I am proud to work here.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

Provider was not interested in my questions or concerns. His answers were very limited in depth and scope. He was not aware of other, non-cancer related health issues that subsequently became important during my treatment. He didn't want to spend time to explain results of scans. I am not sure that he even review the results of my scans before our meeting.

Dr. Kang spent 50 minutes with me - I never felt rushed - answered all questions. He seemed confident in his abilities without being arrogant or "put offish."
Dr.Kang needs to be cloned. Wherever I am, it I have difficulties, I will find my way back to Dr. Kang at The James.
Dr Kang is very professional and through. Looked at my cheek, took biopsie, requested I get mri then scheduled surgery.
Dr. Kang has always been thorough with his communication with me. He considers my thoughts and feelings regarding treatment and my care. I've always felt, Dr. Kang actually cared about what happened to me.
The doctors are very good about listening and explaining what their plan is and probable outcome

Dr. Blakai and Dr. Stephen Kang are very good doctors.
Dr. Kang is an amazing doctor. I would put my life in hands again. Because of Dr. Kang I'm cancer free. Dr. Kang let me know that they took a chance on me because of my type of cancer. He's still amazed I survived and that I'm doing as well as I am. Not many make it. I owe my life to Dr. Kang.
The doctor & his staff are very friendly & helpful. I have seen them for many years.
