In dealing with patients who have lesions within the thyroid, traditionally we have been uncertain which should be removed and which can be observed. At the OSUCCC – James, we use the latest technology to help make this determination so that we can safely remove some cancers while keeping other patients from unnecessary procedures.
Once patients have a diagnosis of cancer, I’m able to collaborate with my colleagues to make sure these patients have the most cutting-edge treatments. My research interests include the development of novel therapeutics for aggressive thyroid cancer, and determining the role of a tumor’s microenvironment in thyroid cancer progression.
I also serve as an assistant professor for surgical oncology for The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and have co-authored many articles in such journals as Cancer Research, Journal of Surgical Oncology and Journal Of Medicine And Biomedical Sciences.
There is no greater honor than being able to practice alongside some of the most renowned cancer experts in the world. Beyond this, there’s a wonderful camaraderie among my colleagues. We’re all focused on one goal – creating a cancer-free world.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies, etc. because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 03/25/2016, Dr. Shirley has reported no financial relationships with medical device, research and/or drug companies, etc. If you have questions about how these relationships are monitored by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, please contact our Compliance Office at 614-293-7802.
