About Me

I am a medical oncologist who treats patients with blood cancers. I joined the faculty at The Ohio State University in 2005 and am currently a fully tenured professor of internal medicine, as well as the associate director for Translational and Clinical Science in the Division of Hematology. I was named to the Castle Connolly list of “Regional Top Doctors” from 2016-2018.

As a member of the Leukemia and Hematologic Malignancies Program at the OSUCCC – James, my clinical research is dedicated to patients with aggressive lymphomas, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) and AIDS malignancies. I have taken a leadership role in overseeing research of the lymphoma group in the Division of Hematology. My laboratory collaborates with clinical researchers in the division and on a national level to perform correlative laboratory work for multiple clinical trials. I am also a member of the NIH/NCIs AIDS Malignancy Consortium, the National Marrow Donor Program and the Bone Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network protocol team, which has completed two treatment protocols for treating HIV-positive patients with autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

I have remained consistently committed to the mentorship and career development of young scientists, physicians and physician-scientists who are inspired to pursue careers in basic, translational or clinical cancer research. My dedication to education and training the next generation of physician scientists is exemplified by leadership positions within the Department of Internal Medicine. I am the director of the Physician Scientists Training Program (PSTP) and regularly contribute to the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine’s PSTP Directors Group. I also serve as the assistant program director for The Ohio State University Internal Medicine Residency Program.

These positions have allowed me to play an integral role in delivering high-quality mentorship to trainees and junior faculty at Ohio State University, where I have been the recipient of multiple teaching and mentorship awards — a testament to my dedication to this important line of work. I have provided mentorship to over 100 students/post docs in the lab, most of whom remain engaged in academics. With the support of philanthropic efforts from an Ohio State University emeritus professor and collaboration with faculty with Ohio State University Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), I have recently embarked on an effort to connect highly talented minority students from disadvantaged backgrounds into the Biomedical Sciences and other STEM programs with the ultimate goal of providing longitudinal mentorship into MD and PhD programs and the physician scientist workforce.
