My expertise includes neuro-ophthalmology, as well as orbital disease and oculoplastics.

I'm interested in orbital (eye socket) surgery. I treat patients with orbital tumors and diseases of the orbit, such as thyroid eye disease. I also treat pseudotumor cerebri, a disease involving raised pressure within the skull. I pioneered a technique to reduce this pressure. We treat patients from around the country for this disease.

There are only about 430 neuro-ophthalmologists in America. I think it's an interesting specialty and a great service to provide.

There are also great needs within oculoplastics and orbital disease. My work goes beyond repairs that may be cosmetic, such as droopy or malpositioned eyelids. There are many sick patients who need reconstructive surgery that isn't cosmetic. Ohio State's academic setting provides a great opportunity to help them.

Personalized care is critical. I educate patients so they can make informed choices. Some people think there is one paradigm that fits everyone. However, I don't take a one-size-fits-all approach to medicine. Each person has different genetics and environmental influences, and not one person responds the same way to a disease.

Industry Relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

As of 03/25/2016, Dr. Katz has reported no financial relationships with medical device, research and/or drug companies.
