About Me

I’m a prosthodontist specializing in patients whose cancer, cancer therapy, congenital defects, or trauma has affected their oral-facial structures. I focus on dental clearance examinations and fabrication of custom radiographic dosimetry stents prior to cancer therapy. My practice also includes intraoral rehabilitation, facial prosthetics and speech rehabilitation.

I received my dental degree from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. I completed my prosthodontic specialization at the University of Pittsburgh. I received a certification in maxillofacial prosthodontics and oral oncology from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

My research concentrates on the management and treatment of oral-facial structures affected by cancer and cancer therapies, including radiation, chemotherapy and stem cell transplants. I focus on laser therapy for the treatment of oral mucositis, which is a common complication of radiation and chemotherapy. I’ve given lectures on my research across the country, and I serve as an associate professor at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry.

What I love most about working at the OSUCCC – James is having access to the best technology and research. With the abundance of resources and the support of my medical colleagues, I can provide the best care possible for my patients. I champion and develop education for my patients regarding their conditions and treatments, so they can make the best decisions for their individual lives. The James makes this level of care possible, and I am honored to work in such a comprehensive cancer center.

Consulting and Related Relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

As of 03/28/2017, Dr. Kessling has reported no financial relationships with medical device, research and/or drug companies.
