Abbott Labs, Science Lead, Center for Nutrition Learning and Memory

kuchanMatt currently serves as Abbott Nutrition’s Global Cognition Platform Lead and as Science Lead, Center for Nutrition Learning and Memory at the University of Illinois.  In these overlapping roles, he works with a global team of cognition scientists and University professors to drive scientific quality and market value into Abbott Nutrition’s cognition portfolio across the life stages.  Matt also directly manages a team of scientists who contribute to cognition and other benefit platforms.  Both teams focus on identifying new benefits for nutrients currently in Abbott Nutrition formulas, and new nutrient technologies which deliver new cognition benefits for product end-users.  Matt’s true passion lies in his research responsibilities focused on the exploring the role of lutein and a-tocopherol in brain development in the infant and in cognitive decline in the elderly. 

Matt joined Abbott Nutrition in 1993 and has held individual contributor and management positions in Pediatric and Adult R&D.  Matt left Abbott Nutrition to join Colgate Palmolive/Hill’s Pet Nutrition to lead their effort in product palatability in 2005. He then rejoined Abbott in 2007, and became Section Head, Pediatric Translation Research in January 2009.  Matt simultaneously assumed the Global Cognition Platform Lead and Science Lead, CNLM roles early in 2011.

Matt earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Saint Louis University, an MS in Human Physiology from Illinois State University and his Ph.D. in Nutritional Science from the University of Illinois followed by a Post Doctorate in Chemical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University.

Matt is married to Sandra Kuchan, with whom he is partnering to raise 7 children.  In his free time, Matt escapes by bicycle and gardens.
