How to refer your patient to Ohio State
Ohio State’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is designated as a Level 4 epilepsy center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Our center provides patients the highest quality care by a collaborative team of experts working under the banner of Ohio State’s Neurological Institute.
EPILEPSY OUTPATIENT EVALUATION
Patient meets one or more of the following criteria:
- New onset seizures
- Refractory epilepsy as defined by failure of two or more appropriately selected anti-epileptic drugs
- Pregnant women with epilepsy
- Potential surgical candidate
EPILEPSY MONITORING UNIT (EMU) EVALUATION
Patient meets the following criteria:
- Routine EEG within 2 years (preferred)
- Uncontrolled seizures
- Needs spell characterization or presurgical evaluation
EPILEPSY SURGERY EVALUATION
Typical criteria:
- Diagnosed with drug-resistant or refractory epilepsy as defined by failure of two or more appropriately selected anti-epileptic drugs
- Single cortical seizure focus
Diagnostic testing:
- EMU evaluation (Phase I)
- MRI 3T
- PET scan
- Neuropsychological testing
Additional testing may be necessary including:
- Ictal SPECT scan
- Wada testing for language and memory
- Phase II evaluation with intracranial electrodes
