Letter from the Chief Residents
Welcome to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center! We are excited for your interest. Our residents receive comprehensive rehabilitation education and training. We rotate through all the major hospital systems in the Columbus metropolitan area and treat a diverse patient population in a mix of academic, private, and government healthcare settings.
Our primary inpatient rotations occur at Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital, a stand-alone hospital located on the Ohio State University Medical Center campus that was established in 1964. Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital is part of the model systems program for both traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. We are CARF accredited in brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, cancer rehabilitation, and comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation. Our residents train as multidisciplinary team leaders on dedicated inpatient rotations in SCI, TBI, stroke, cancer rehabilitation and general rehabilitation. Additionally, our residents have a robust inpatient and outpatient pediatric experience with the largest pediatric Physiatry group in Ohio at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals and research institutes.
Our outpatient clinics continue to build on these fundamental physical medicine and rehabilitation principles. We train with nationally-recognized leaders in electrodiagnostics, spasticity management, sports medicine, diagnostic and interventional ultrasound, pain management, interventional spine techniques, prosthetics and orthotics, assistive technology, and osteoporosis and bone metabolism.
We hold monthly attending-led journal club sessions that teach residents to critically analyze published literature to maintain the most up to date practices. Additionally, our faculty educate residents through daily morning lectures divided into neurorehabilitation, general rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, musculoskeletal and ultrasound, neuromuscular and electrodiagnostic, and prosthetics and orthotics courses. Our extensive clinical opportunities and formal didactics prepare our graduates to excel in board examinations, fellowships, job opportunities, and leadership positions.
Columbus is an ideal place to live as it continues to be one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S., yet boasts a lower cost of living than other metropolitan areas. It offers recreation to both residents and their families. We have one of the nation’s top children’s museums (COSI) and zoos, a great selection of restaurants and breweries, and a variety of festivals, markets, art exhibitions, concerts, and theatre. Columbus is a really great city for people who want to be active. There is a fantastic metropark and multipurpose trail system. Other parks, like Highbanks Metro Park and Hocking Hills, have excellent hiking trails. Columbus is an exciting place to be a sports fan with the Columbus Clippers, Crew SC, Bluejackets, and of course The Ohio State University Buckeyes. Go Bucks!
