Adult Psychopathology Track

Interns who are selected for the Adult Psychopathology Track will provide outpatient services as part of one of three primary rotations: Mood, Anxiety and Mindfulness, Early Psychosis Intervention Center (EPICENTER), and Suicide and Trauma Reduction Initiative (STRIVE). Interns will spend two days per week for a full year providing clinical services on their primary rotation and one day per week on a secondary rotation. We typically contact interns prior to the start of internship regarding the secondary rotations that are available for the year. One day per week is reserved for research. The remaining day is reserved for didactics and optional elective experiences. Each primary rotation has opportunities for participation in research and there are a variety of research labs outside of the Adult Psychopathology Track that welcome interns.

Each primary rotation on the adult psychopathology track is assigned its own number within the APPIC application system. Applicants may apply to multiple primary rotations on Adult Psychopathology Track as part of the APPIC application process.

Rotations

Early Psychosis Intervention Center (EPICENTER)

Interns will complete a yearlong rotation at the Early Psychosis Intervention Center (EPICENTER) located within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic. EPICENTER provides individuals early in the course of a psychotic illness access to several evidence-based psychosocial interventions for psychosis: cognitive behavioral therapy, family psychoeducation and metacognitive remediation. Interns will carry a caseload of EPICENTER clients and will be responsible for providing all clinical services to these individuals. As there is significant variation in the number of services that each EPICENTER client completes, the size of an intern’s caseload will be based on the number of clinical services that they are providing per week.

During the Early Onset Psychosis rotation, interns will also assist in the delivery of two group interventions provided to EPICENTER clients: group cognitive behavioral therapy and multifamily group psychoeducation.

Interns may have the opportunity to participate in additional training opportunities, including providing psychotherapy to individuals with longstanding psychotic disorders or to individuals at ultra-high risk for developing a psychotic disorder, administering comprehensive clinical assessments to individuals receiving care at EPICENTER and assisting in the dissemination and delivery of EPICENTER services throughout central and southeast Ohio.

Mood, Anxiety and Mindfulness

Interns on the Mood, Anxiety and Mindfulness rotation, will spend two days each week for a full year providing evidence-based interventions within the Department of Psychiatry’s Mood and Anxiety Program. Treatments include cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based interventions for adults who are seeking outpatient care for mood and anxiety disorders in an outpatient setting. They will be expected to complete diagnostic clinical evaluations as a means of solidifying their skills in assessment and differential diagnosis as well as in developing case formulations. Additional training opportunities include two group psychotherapy experiences: group behavioral activation and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) for relapse prevention. During the one protected research day per week, interns will have the opportunity to work with investigators engaged in clinical research on depression and anxiety within the Division of Cognition and Emotion. Approximately 10% of the intern’s time will be devoted to supervision.
Suicide and Trauma Reduction Initiative (STRIVE)

Over the years, our team has developed targeted treatments for suicide risk reduction as well as further refined and improved existing, evidence-based trauma disorder treatments. Interns in this rotation will be expected to learn our in house developed suicide prevention treatments, which include Crisis Response Planning (CRP) and Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (BCBT), as well as existing VA/DoD recommended treatments for PTSD (e.g., Cognitive Processing Therapy). The intern with whom we match will complete a yearlong rotation as an active member of The Suicide and Trauma Reduction Initiative for Veterans (STRIVE) lab. STRIVE exists to further advance research and clinical treatment in the areas of suicide and trauma prevention and intervention for military personnel, veterans, first responders and their families.

In addition to their participation in the STRIVE lab, the intern will use the skills acquired to treat participants in ongoing clinical trials research. Our lab currently has several ongoing clinical trials funded through the Department of Defense, National Institute of Mental Health, and various private corporations. As such, interns will work closely with project coordinators of the various studies to deliver evidence-based care with high fidelity. This will include delivering therapy in traditional weekly format as well as in a condensed intensive model where therapy is administered daily over the span of two weeks. Interns will also have opportunities to conduct eligibility screening and diagnostic assessment to determine appropriateness of participants for the participation in the clinical trial. Interns in this rotation will gain firsthand experience in conducting applied clinical research within a highly active clinical research lab.

Interns will spend two days each week involved in providing clinical care. In addition, one day is protected for research related to trauma and/or suicide prevention. An additional day is devoted to participation in elective experiences. The remaining day is devoted to internship related didactics. Supervision is provided within each of the noted experiences.

In addition to an interest in suicide prevention and the treatment of trauma, the successful applicant for this rotation will have a strong interest and background in the delivery of evidence-based care, applied clinical research, and prior experience working with veterans and/or active duty service members. Candidates interested in continuing their education and training in applied clinical research during their internship year are strongly encouraged to apply to this rotation.
