Research Interests
A major focus of current research in Dr. Hartwick’s lab is understanding how a subset of ganglion cells are able to capture light and convert it into an electrical signal. These cells express melanopsin photopigment and are termed intrinsically photoreceptive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). In addition to their electrophysiology, their contribution to the human pupillary light reflex is a major topic of study in the lab. Recent clinical-based research has examined how ipRGC photoreception is affected in patients with glaucoma and traumatic brain injury.
