What to expect

What to expect

Your surgeon isn’t only there for you during treatment. He or she is with you every step of the way – before, during and after.

Preparing for your treatment

An experienced plastic surgeon at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center will be happy to meet with you and discuss all aspects of rhinoplasty. Together, you’ll determine the best plan for your specific needs.

During your treatment

Rhinoplasty typically involves making incisions outside or inside the nostrils. The skilled surgeons at OSU Wexner Medical Center make the necessary incisions along the natural creases of the nose to minimize the appearance of any residual scarring. Your plastic surgeon will remove nasal cartilage and bone and reshape your nose as desired. A temporary nasal splint will likely be applied to help the nose maintain its new shape. It may also be necessary to apply gauze inside the nostrils for a short time to stabilize the septum and any blood flow.

The entire procedure usually takes about two hours and is performed under a general anesthetic for your comfort and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

After your treatment

It is common to experience bruising and swelling in the area of the nose for several days after rhinoplasty. Swelling should be completely gone after about one month. Any pain or discomfort in the days following surgery can be minimized with medication. You’ll need to keep your head elevated for about a day after rhinoplasty surgery. Strenuous activity or heavy lifting needs to be avoided for at least three weeks. You should also avoid blowing your nose for at least a week. It’s especially important to protect the nose from harm for a few months after the procedure.
