Interventional/Diagnostic Radiology (IR/DR) Integrated Residency Program

The Ohio State University Department of Radiology offers two Interventional Radiology / Diagnostic Radiology (IR/DR) Residency positions per year through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), beginning in 2017. This Residency is a five-year program to commence post-internship and is comprised of three years of predominantly diagnostic radiology with two years of interventional radiology. Applicants would ideally be in the fourth year of Medical School, but non-traditional applicants will be accepted with the understanding that Residency training would not commence until 15 months after the match. Additionally, the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program offers up to two positions in an ACGME-approved Early Specialization in Radiology (ESIR) curriculum, although these residents will have to later match in an Independent IR Residency to complete their training.

Our practice features a myriad of image-guided interventions in oncology, hepatobiliary, genitourinary, complex venous pathology and much more. The environment encourages exchange of knowledge and experience among residents and faculty in the program, as well as with residents, fellows and faculty in other major clinical specialties within the medical center.

Procedural volume in our department last year exceeded 8500 patient encounters. We anticipate our procedural volume per trainee to easily exceed 2000 cases. We have developed a robust interventional oncology practice that is integrated with oncologic subspecialties. Our practice performs a high volume of image-guided therapies that include chemoembolization, radioembolization, cryoablation and radiofrequency or microwave ablation.

The practice consists of two sites separated by approximately 100 yards. The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC–James) was opened in 2015 and is the third largest cancer hospital in the nation. The OSUCCC–James is one of only 46 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation. OSUCCC–James has 3 state of the art angiography suites with one dedicated computed tomography procedure room and two interventional ultrasound suites.

The University Hospitals site serves the UH, as well as the Ross Heart Hospital and the Brain and Spine Hospital. This site has 3 Angiography suites installed in 2018, along with an older fourth suite. Additionally, an interventional computed tomography procedure room and one procedural ultrasound suite are found in University Hospital.

There is a full slate of support services, as well. Mid-level providers, nurses and Techs are exceptionally well trained. More than sufficient outpatient intake and recovery facilities are present in both the James and University Hospitals. A fully functioning clinic operates every weekday until noon supporting the clinical mission of IR.

Interventional Radiology- Independent Residency Program

The Ohio State University Department of Radiology offers up to two Independent Interventional Radiology Residency positions per year through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), beginning in 2020. The number of positions is dependent on the number in fifth year Integrated Residency. There are 2 total positions filled first from the Integrated program, supplemented by the Independent Match, if needed. This residency is technically a two-year position. However, Ohio State requires completion or expected completion of an accredited ESIR curriculum, allowing the resident to skip the first year of this residency, effectively making this a one-year position.

The Independent Residency utilizes the resources described above to emphasize the refining of wire/catheter skills in an apprenticeship model. The availability of a large number of quality cases and the relatively small number of residents allow the maximum exposure to interesting and educational cases. Case logs typically show 1100 to 1400 individual patient encounters, predominately of the more educational variety.

Our rotation schedule is designed to maximize the radiological, procedural and clinical skills of our trainees. IR/DR residents complete several non-interventional radiology clinical rotations specifically chosen to develop the clinical skills needed for a successful interventional radiology career. These rotations are sponsored by the Departments of Medicine and Surgery, and include rotations in medical oncology and surgical oncology, the medical intensive care unit and hepatology. The Vascular Surgery rotation is completed at Ohio State or with an affiliated private practice vascular surgeon and interventionist in a community-based hospital. This community-based setting provides a unique experience for our trainees, allowing for hands-on training in vascular interventional skills as a primary operator or first assist.

Interventional Oncology (IO)

At the OSUCCC – James Comprehensive Cancer Hospital, trainees will become proficient in interventional oncology procedures, including trans arterial chemoembolization (TACE), Y-90 radioembolization, cryoablation and radiofrequency and microwave ablation, as well as many other interventions necessary to provide complete care to the oncologic patient.

Peripheral Arterial Disease

Trainees will rotate on a private practice vascular surgery service at a local community hospital, receiving extensive valuable exposure to peripheral vascular disease including endovascular repair, surgical treatment and non-invasive imaging. There will also be experience in endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), subintimal arterial flossing with antegrade-retrograde intervention (SAFARI) and a variety of dialysis access intervention.

Hepatobiliary Interventions

Trainees are exposed to a variety of portal and biliary interventions. Our robust hepatic transplant and hepatology departments allow trainees to be exposed to interventions needed for the management of hepatic transplant complications and hepatic cirrhosis. Our practice performs a high volume of transjugular, intrahepatic, portosystemic shunts (TIPS) on Ohio State patients and outside referrals, allowing for maximal trainee exposure.

Venous Disease

Trainees will participate in a wide range of venous interventions, including complex vena cava reconstructions, thrombolysis, complex inferior vena cava (IVC) filter retrievals and central vein reconstruction and recanalization. Our practice utilizes the newest technology in complex vascular cases such as radiofrequency wire recannalization and intravascular ultrasound.

Pediatric Interventions

Residents gain experience in pediatric interventional radiology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH. The pediatric interventional radiology group at Nationwide is well known for their ground-breaking discoveries in sclerosing treatments of venolymphatic malformations and cystic bony lesions such as aneurysmal bone cysts. Residents here have the unique opportunity to participate in these types of cases. Additionally, residents perform more routine procedures such as venous access, gastrointestinal access and intervention, arterial and venous angiography, as well as image guided drainages and biopsies.

Applications for the Integrated Interventional Radiology IR/DR Residency Program and the Independent Interventional Radiology Residency are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) only. Please refer to ERAS or the contact person at your school to learn more about applying for residency.

ERAS is sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, deans' letters, transcripts and other supporting credentials from medical schools to residency program directors. For the Integrated Residency, we do not require any additional documents beyond those required by the ERAS.

To apply for the Independent Residency, the applicant must submit a letter from their Diagnostic Radiology Program Director stating that they have completed or are expected to complete an accredited ESIR curriculum within their Residency. The Department of Radiology participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Application Requirements

In order to be considered for our training program, we require the following:
  • Completion and submission of the ERAS common application form
  • Dean's letter
  • An official copy of your medical school transcript
  • USMLE or COMLEX test scores
  • Personal statement
  • Three additional letters of recommendation from physicians who are acquainted with your work or capabilities.
  • A personal interview on The Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio
The application deadline for the Integrated Residency is October 1. The application deadline for the Independent Residency is December 30. Applications will not be reviewed after this date.

To be eligible for appointment to the IR Independent program, residents must have successfully completed an accredited Diagnostic Radiology program, with ESIR designation. Applicants will need to email a verification letter from their Diagnostic Radiology Program Director attesting enrollment in this program and expected completion graduation date the Education Program Manager, Samantha Schnitzer at the time of application. This must be received prior to extending an offer to interview.

Please note, all applicants must be a U.S. citizen and must be able to obtain a medical license in the State of Ohio prior to starting the fellowship.

Interview Day

Interviews are offered by invitation, and are a required part of the selection process. The day is designed so that you will have the opportunity to learn more about the program, meet with members of our selection committee, and engage with current IR, DR residents and fellows.
