General Research: Dr. Forand focuses on personalized medicine approaches to treating depression. Specifically, he develops cost-effective predictive tools to identify individuals who would benefit from cognitive behavioral psychotherapy for depression. This work draws on standard psychological assessments as well as on novel neurocognitive assessments using pupilometry and EEG. Work to date at Ohio Statehas focused on the use of computerized, Internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy, which is an effective, low-cost and “low-intensity” treatment for depression, that has the potential to vastly increase access to empirically supported psychotherapy for depression.

Research/Clinical Interests: Depression, psychiatry

Research Techniques: Neurocognitive assessments using pupilometry and EEG

Current Research Projects: Dr. Forand is currently engaged in a pilot study funded by the CCTS KL2 career development award to study predictors of response to computerized CBT for depression, including prefrontal regulatory control indexed by pupillary responses. This study will also pilot a brief EEG assessment using an inexpensive consumer grade EEG device. Dr. Forand is engaged in several other collaborations with researchers in the Ohio State Department of Psychology as well as with researchers at other universities.

Active Funding: OSU/KL2 Career Development Award, The Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science, NCCIH
