About the Program

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine's Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is characterized by a well-rounded experience in clinical and investigative interventional and diagnostic techniques. The program is organized to provide training and experience in the evaluation and management of a wide variety of patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, valvular heart disease and peripheral vascular disease.

The goal of the interventional program is to produce fellows who achieve competency in the performance of a wide range of interventional techniques and to help them in applying these techniques toward meaningful basic and clinical research. Upon successful completion of the fellowship, the trainee will be board eligible in interventional cardiology.

Clinical Training

Clinical training will occur in the cardiac catheterization and interventional laboratories within the Division of Cardiology. During training, interventional cardiology fellows will have opportunities to diagnose, select therapies, perform interventional procedures and manage the treatment for inpatients and outpatients with coronary artery diseases. The fellowship will also offer wide exposure in the evaluation of patients with peripheral vascular disease and structural heart disease, as well as interventional procedures required to treat this patient population. In addition, interventional cardiology fellows will participate in routine lectures, case review and didactic sessions with the faculty.

Interventional cardiology fellows will be expected to develop the skills required to select appropriate patients for specific interventional techniques and will be involved in post-procedural care. They will also acquire skills in performing and interpreting coronary angiographic images, hemodynamics, intravascular imaging, physiologic assessment of lesions, along with performing a variety of percutaneous cardiovascular interventions.

The interventional cardiology fellowship program also offers an ambulatory clinic for long-term care for patients with coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease and structural heart disease.

Research

Interventional cardiology fellows will be required to pursue a scholarly project and encouraged to submit their research for presentation at scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals. Interventional cardiology fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in novel clinical trials.

The Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute provides a vehicle for amplifying clinical investigation that will enhance the research productivity of trainees. This association with the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute enables the cardiac catheterization laboratories to investigate novel therapies for ischemic heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and structural heart disease.
