Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not make enough insulin or does not use efficiently the insulin that is produced. As a result, there is too much sugar in the blood. Insulin, a hormone normally produced by beta cells in the pancreas, is needed to move blood sugar, called glucose, into cells. Sugar stored in the cells can be used later for energy.

Without insulin or if the body does not use insulin efficiently, too much sugar remains in the blood rather than moving to cells. Symptoms appear slowly and sometimes go unnoticed.

Type 2 diabetes is more common than type 1 diabetes. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases as people get older or if they are obese, have a family history of diabetes or are inactive.
