Russell Lonser, MD

Professor and Chair, Department of Neurological Surgery

Russell Lonser, MD, a professor and chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at The Ohio State University, is an expert in neurological surgery for treating patients with brain cancer, brain injuries, pituitary cancers, brain concussions, brain hemorrhage and brain stem tumors. He completed residencies in neurological surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center and at the University of Utah Hospital. He then completed a research fellowship at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Carrau's clinical and research interests include head oncology, swallowing disorders, salivary gland disorders and sialendoscopy, endoscopic sinus surgery and endoscopic and open skull base surgery. He joined the faculty of Ohio State’s Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery in 2011 as a tenured professor, director of the Comprehensive Skull Base Surgery Program and co-director of the Anatomy Laboratory Toward Visuospatial Innovation in Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery (ALT-VISION), a research and education lab.

Dr. Farhadi’s laboratory is focused on developing and validating small animal models of central and peripheral nervous system injury that can be used to test the potential of stem-cell implantation to enhance functional recovery. The results and conclusions will help guide the rational design of human trials evaluating the clinical potential of stem-cell therapies.

Dr. Lonser completed neurosurgical training at the University of Utah and a research fellowship at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. He investigates brain, brainstem and spinal cord tumor treatments. He studies neoplasia syndromes, direct nervous system drug delivery and tumor biology. Neoplasia studies include pathogenesis/propagation in familial tumor suppressor syndromes, including von Hippel-Lindau disease. Dr. Lonser leads the National Football League Research Subcommittee and serves on the NFL’s Head, Neck and Spine Medical Committee.

Shahid Nimjee, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor-Clinical, Neurological Surgery

Dr. Nimjee earned his PhD and MD from Duke University where he also completed an endovascular/cerebrovascular neurosurgery fellowship. His clinical interests include open and endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disease. His research interests include exploiting the properties of RNA biology to better diagnose and treat thromboembolic disease as it pertains to cerebrovascular neurosurgery. Dr. Nimjee was awarded the K12 Award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, one of only seven neurosurgeons to have received this award.

Dr. Otto's research interests include predictors of clinical outcomes for rhinosinusitis and the pathogenesis of nasal polyps. As a member of the Comprehensive Skull Base Surgery Center, he is also interested in the development of new techniques and devices to treat complex skull base disorders.

Dr. Rezai completed his neurosurgery residency at New York University Medical Center and was a clinical fellow in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. He also completed a fellowship at the Karolinska Institute as clinical observer, functional neurosurgery. Dr. Rezai’s clinical interests include neuromodulation, functional neurosurgery, neuroimaging, movement disorders, psychiatric disorders, pain and traumatic brain injury (TBI). His research interests include neuromodulation for migraine headaches, asthma, addictions, Alzheimer’s, obesity, post-traumatic stress disorders, TBI and autism.
