What Is Amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis is the collective term for several diseases that occur when an abnormal protein — or amyloid — affects tissues or organs throughout the body, causing a malfunction and, if severe, organ failure. Amyloid can affect the heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, nervous system, skin and digestive system. There are several types of amyloidosis, but the three most frequently diagnosed are AL (light chain or primary) amyloidosis, secondary amyloidosis and hereditary (familial) amyloidosis. Treatment or management of the disease depends on the specific type of amyloidosis that is diagnosed.
