About the Program

The COACH Program, (Columbus Ohio Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program) at The Ohio State University Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital is one of the most experienced and largest in the United States with almost 5000 outpatient visits per year at our nine locations around Columbus and throughout the state of Ohio. Our program is uniquely housed between these two academic medical centers (OSUMC and NCH), allowing us to utilize the skills and expertise of subspecialties at both hospital systems to provide individualized and high-quality care.

The COACH Fellowship Program offers two fully-funded, 24-month fellowship positions (one each year). The Schooler Family Foundation’s COACH Fellowship Program and hospital-based GME-funded fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is designed for those interested in a cardiovascular career specializing in the care of adults with congenital heart disease.

As an ACHA ACHD accredited center, our fellowship program is led by nine ACHD board certified cardiologists who specialize in numerous different areas including ACHD advanced imaging, ACHD interventional cardiology, ACHD electrophysiology, ACHD heart failure, echocardiography, pulmonary hypertension and cardio-obstetrics. In addition, our team is supported by a knowledgeable and incredibly supportive team that includes five full time APNs, six RNs, four office administrators and one full time social worker who understand the unique challenges and needs of our ACHD patients and their families.

With more than 20 years of experience in training fellows in adult congenital heart disease, our program offers specialized training in cardio-obstetrics, ACHD heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, sports cardiology, connective tissue disorders and advanced ACHD imaging. Additionally, our fellows are involved in our program’s ongoing research projects to advance and promote ACHD care. On average, faculty and fellows in our program are part of 15-20 publications per year and 5-10 grant funded studies.

Following graduation, our fellows have transitioned to highly successful careers in the ACHD field. Once they have completed training, they historically advance to start new ACHD programs, join as faculty existing and highly successful ACHD programs and become international leaders in ACHD research.

Curriculum

  • 24 month of ACHD training (including inpatient, outpatient, imaging, cardiac catheterization and elective time)
  • Split between The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital
  • Individualized curriculum and tailored training pathway depending on a fellow’s training background and professional interests
  • Curriculum based upon rotations and competencies approved by ABIM and submitted to ACGME

Application Process

Eligibility Criteria

  • MD or DO
  • U.S. citizenship, permanent resident or J1 Visa status
  • Completion of a three-year ACGME-accredited cardiology fellowship program by the time of entry
